Sand Fencing and Dune Grass Planting Project

The Shoreline Management Commission proposed a sand fencing and dune grass planting project to the Dare County Board of Commissioners.  The project was funded with interest on the funds collected from the one percent tax for shoreline management.  On April 2, 2006, the Board of Commissioners approved the project.  The project was established as a pilot project to last three years.

The plan included dune plantings and/or sand fencing in areas in Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Hatteras Island.  The project was segmented into 7 equal segments, 5 in the municipalities and 2 on Hatteras Island in Rodanthe and Buxton.

The first year of the project was completed with Dare County contracting for work in Duck, Southern Shores, Rodanthe and Buxton. Kitty Hawk completed their segment of the project with public works resources. The towns of Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head completed their segments with contractors. The total project the first year provided for approximately 16,000 linear feet of planting and/or fencing. Significant sand accumulation was realized in many locations throughout the project area.
